PPP Sanghar leaders condemn Maryam Nawaz’s remarks on Indus water dispute

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sanghar chapter leaders strongly condemned Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s recent remarks regarding the construction of canals on the Indus River and other contentious water issues.

In a joint statement, PPP Sanghar district president MPA Ali Hassan Hingorjo, general secretary Jahangir Junejo and spokesperson Imran Dhameah said that the Constitution clearly stipulates that no decision on disputed canals or dams can be taken without the consensus of all provinces.

They alleged that by issuing such statements, the Punjab CM was not only disregarding the Constitution but also fuelling provincial discord and spreading ethnic bias among federating units.

The leaders said that as both the niece of the prime minister and Punjab’s chief minister, Maryam Nawaz should have exercised responsibility and restraint. Instead, they added, she appeared to be undermining national unity, the democratic system and the coalition government.

They further claimed that her controversial remarks seemed part of a “calculated plan” to incite Sindh’s government and people, and to overshadow Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s successful visit to the United States.
